How the New Age of Professional Golfers are Changing the Sport

Golf has existed since 15th-century Scotland and has been played professionally for over a century. The Professional Golfers Association was formed in 1916, and since then, countless legendary golfers have played the sport. Golf’s fanbase has made a significant shift in the past 10 years; More young people are watching and following golf all thanks to the electrifying player base.


There is currently a new generation of talented, young golfers making headlines the PGA. Colin Morikawa might be the most exciting young golfer on tour right now. The 24 year old from Los Angeles began his professional career in 2019 and proceeded to make 22 consecutive cuts on tour. The only golfer with more consecutive made cuts to start their professional career is Tiger Woods with 25. Morikawa already has five tour wins under his belt; Two of his wins are major championships, the 2021 Open Championship and the 2020 PGA Championship. He won both of his major championships in his major debuts. Morikawa was also selected to compete in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics where he lost in a bronze medal playoff match.


Viktor Hovland, a 23 year old Norwegian, has also started to make a name for himself in professional golf. He has two PGA Tour wins and one European Tour win since he became a professional in 2019. Hovland is still young, but his stats have been compared to golfers like Rory McIlroy and Justin Thomas when they were the same age. He hasn’t claimed a major championship yet, but expect great things from him as his career continues to develop.

This list of thrilling under-25 golfers wouldn’t be complete without Matthew Wolff, the 22 year old from California. Even though he only has one PGA Tour win, he is flashy and rowdy on the course. Wolff is one of the youngest players on tour, but he radiates a certain energy when he plays that makes watching him captivating. Despite some of his initial struggles, he has shown that he is an excellent putter. His only tour win was at the 2019 3M Open where he finished with a one stroke lead over Bryson DeChambeau after sinking a 26-foot eagle putt on the 18th hole.

Sungjae Im is another young player who will likely have a fantastic career. He is 23 years old and was born in South Korea. Im has one PGA Tour win at the 2020 Honda Classic, two Web.com Tour wins and one Korean Tour win. Golf experts have compared him to players like Jason Day or Rickie Fowler, but also say he needs to have stronger play with his irons.
